Parents make the important decision to enroll their child at La Europa Academy primarily because of therapeutic challenges they are facing. However, many are also experiencing either academic challenges or academic consequences as a result of their emotional struggles. Many residential programs minimize the academic component and use online coursework or learning packets with an instructor teaching multiple subjects or levels at the same time. Our students attend classes with highly qualified, full-time, licensed teachers. La Europa school is accredited through the Cognia accrediting agency. All credits are fully transferable to home school districts. Students who are completing their high school credits at La Europa, can earn a La Europa high school diploma by filling the Utah State Office of Education graduation requirements.
At La Europa, our belief is that a strong and challenging academic program is an important component of helping our students heal, develop resiliency, competency and establish future direction. The academic component compliments the therapeutic program by:
Our academic program is a strong college preparatory curriculum and is also easily modified to accommodate the learning strengths and styles of every student.
Our School Facility, Class Size and Schedule
At La Europa, class sizes generally range in size from 6 to 15 students and are taught by certified, licensed teachers who have experience teaching students in alternative or private education settings. In our small and supportive classes, students are able to feel comfortable seeking support and gain an increasing amount of independence in their learning. La Europa has full-time teachers for Science, Math, English Language Arts, and Social Studies. We have part-time teachers for Physical Education. and the many art electives we offer.
The daily schedule at La Europa is similar to most high schools because we want our students to have a normal school experience where they can practice academic and social skills and self-advocacy with teachers. Our schedule includes:
At La Europa, the Academic Team communicates about student needs through quarterly Parent Teacher Conferences and email communications. Each student is assigned an advisor who acts as a liaision between parents and students providing regular check-ins with parents throughout each grading period. They are also available if specific academic concerns arise. If a student is not turning in assignments, supports may be put in place to help the student become an active participant in managing their academic status.
Although La Europa may modify the curriculum to accommodate a student's learning style, our grades are an accurate reflection of their abilities and are similar to what they would receive in any high school. This allows parents and referral sources to accurately gauge the student's academic competence in order to determine the next placement or step after La Europa.
