Support for learningSupport for learning

In addition to classroom instruction and scheduling based on the courses needed for each student, the La Europa education department provides a great deal of student supports. We desire to help students to learn more effectively and to find ways to be successful in school. There are a number of ways that we encourage this.

Positive Behavior Support
All of the teachers at La Europa Academy are dedicated to fostering a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment. Each week La Europa Academy faculty highlight one student that has made extra effort that week in school with the student of the week program. This student is given a certificate, a choice of ice cream from Cold Stone, and a positive parent letter is sent home. Student achievement is also highlighted with the honor roll (3.5 GPA) and high honor roll (3.8) program. Student making one of these honors receives a certificate with their report card and designation on their official transcript. Another positive program recently implemented is the parent email program. Each week, every teacher sends out at least one positive email to the parents of a student’s excellent achievements that week in hat class. Often teachers go above and beyond and send out multiple emails a week. Each teacher also has individual positive reinforcement systems in their classrooms. Teachers at La Europa Academy use tools like verbal praise, tokens, self tracking systems, home work passes, time spent with the teacher, and music to help positively motivate student achievement and performance.

Academic Probation
Academic Probation is a supportive disciplinary tool used to help student how are falling behind in school. Any student that falls 2 or more assignments behind or drops below a 70% in any class is put on Academic Probation. While a student is on Academic Probation they have restricted privileges in the evenings allowing them extra time to completing missing assignments, extra credit, or redo poorly done work. The conditions of coming off Academic Probation are set in collaboration between the teacher and the student. (Please see example form following this section.)

Study Skills Class
The study skills program was developed to help support students with learning disabilities, ADHD, and school anxiety. A certified special education teacher leads this class and implements the curriculum. Many of these students have IEP’s from home school districts are implemented at La Europa Academy. Study skills class gives these students the opportunity to met benchmarks and objectives sets forth in their IEP’s.

During study skills students use a self monitoring system to improve academic performance, study habits, classroom preparedness, and assignment completion. Students in this class meet daily to have planners checked, assignments prioritized, and anxieties processed. In addition, the students in study skills have grade checks weekly to monitor grades, missing work, on time behavior, and classroom preparedness.

Home Passes
It is an important part of the therapeutic and education process to have students practice being at home with their parents. This does, however, mean that at times students so miss school at La Europa Academy. In order to support this process, students complete the home pass homework form before they leave on a home visit. This form helps them organize their homework and creates accountability at home and at school. Please review both sides of the attached homework form.

Individualized Tutoring
During the lunch free time period teachers are available to La Europa Academy student for personal tutoring. Teacher can work one on one with students during this time to enrich skills, re-teach concepts, or complete independent study material. This tutoring is available to students that their request, but at time might be required in certain situations.

Master Education Plans
When a student admits to La Europa Academy, a Master Education Plan is completed within a month. This plan is correlated with the student therapeutic, residential, and nursing plan. All of these plans are aligned around 3 to 5 specific areas of concern. Goals are set in the education plan to help the student overcome and master healthily, functional skills in these areas. These goals are monitored and tracked on the master education plan form. Sample goals and a sample form are attached to this section for review.
